North of Ireland hiking tour – Day 6

Leave Downings and drive to Tra na Rossan (15mins) beach to start the Murder hole looped hike

Finish back at Tra Na Rossan and back to Downings for free time

Today we take a short drive from Downings to Tra na Rossan beach on the Rosgill Peninsula where we begin today’s hike. The first stretch of the hike walking along the beautiful Tra Na Rossan strand followed by an ascent up Cnoc na Slea. The hiker is rewarded with panoramic views of the Rosguill, Fanad and Horn Head peninsulas. We hike through green fields of grazing sheep and drop down a steep sand dune into Boyeeghter Strand/Murder Hole beach.

The name “Murder Hole” is believed to have originated around the nineteenth century when a woman reputedly fell to her death from the cliffs above. Another theory is that it refers to the treacherous currents that are found in the sea, making it unsafe to swim here. Regardless of the name, this beach is one of the most beautiful in the whole of Ireland.

After we soak up the atmosphere, we make our way back to the vehicle going back the way we came. We make one final stop at one of the most famous pubs in all of Donegal, The Singing Pub! We make our way back to Downings after. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included today

Hike: Takes approx 3-4hrs, 4miles; 544ft elevation gain, hiking on beach, dirt tail with wet boggy patches, total drive time 30mins
